Hello Billy, Portrait images are not something I feel really up to speed on to critic but I can say that in V1the image is spoilt by cropping off the beard as this is a major part of the subjects character, the detail and light are good but the bg is a bit like a photo booth curtainTongue The subject also has a very uninterested look on his face.........................
All that said I love what you have done to V3............. Excellent work BillyGrinGrin

I shall agree with Fefe version 3 is the best of all as a matter of presentation. It still doesn't show us though, why Tom is wearing an apron. The background also casts no light in the mystery. Yet is is a nice portrait where unlike the other two, Tom and his beard enjoy some space. I think with large people shooting them from close doesn't flatter them.

Good effort Billy, - and V3 is really good. Of the three, by far the best.

You have the empty space on the wrong side of him, - he should be looking into the space, so thats mod1 Ive uploaded, and it also works well as a portrait crop, which is mod2.

You dont say a lot about the light set up, can you give some details?

Meanwhile, I will take a look at a mod of Vi with some comments on lighting. The lighting looks like its fairly straight on, meaning theres no depth on the face which are provided by shadows from differential lighting, two sources from different directions at different powers. The face, though I know its a healthy red, is a little overly red for me, - and I agree with Kate re inclusing the beard, but I know you were probably limited in what you could do.

Bit late today catching up.
Your subject has an interesting face with that beard,
but it would have been better if he'd been a bit more relaxed looking.
This comes with practise in talking to your model and capturing them when smiling or
relaxed and preferably looking at you. The eyes are the most important part of a portrait,
so it's food to focus on them and hopefully get a catchlight.
In V3 your model is much more relaxed but it would be better him looking into the space
as banehawi suggests. I like Mod 2 in Portrait format.
Having said all this, I think you've done a great job considering these are probably your
first attempts at portraiture. The light is good in V3.

You need someone in your club who has experience of lighting and you need the lighting too. I assume this is your on camera flash and you will rarely get good formal portraits in studio conditions with that. He is a good subject other than his eyes look part closed, but you need him much further from the background, then a main light to give modelling and a fill or reflector to fill shadows. Main lights are usually at 45 degrees to the side and up emulating the sun, but you put them where you like.

Correct positioning of the main light and background puts any flash/lighting shadows out of the frame.

The sepia image is quite good, but I find the sepia rather too warm. A softer light brown tends to look better.

V3 is the best image, but looks a bit on the under exposed side. May brighten n software.

Get the club program secretary to get a portrait lecturer in from the club circuit.
