Torridon skyline

By AnneB50
This photo was taken at the end of the first day of an RPS Travel group trip to Assynt in North West Scotland. We were making our way back to our guest house and stopped to catch this vew of the Torridon mountains. This image had been cropped to lose some of the loch and foreground, does it work?

I'm not a landscape photographer by nature and find this a bit heavy with no real subject. I like the cropping but feel the scene looked rather better than it has recorded. Possibly a need for a bit of dramatic lighting or weather.

Welcome to EPZ Anne.

This does work, but needs to be exposed more to do so. The panoramic crop works quite well, and as a scenery shot, its attractive.

Apart from exposure, some contrast also helps. I have uploaded a mod to show what I mean, just scroll up the page and click the modifications tab.

Its good for us to know what software you use, and what your level of comfort is, - we can tailor our feedback. if you have any version of Photoshop, use the Levels adjustment and look at the graph (histogram). It doesnt extend all the way right or left. under the left and right ends are small trangles; pull then inwards so the meet the graph and see the difference.

Hope this is helpful, and enjoy the site.

Thanks Paul and Willie. It was early evening and I would say that probably is recorded much as seen. I use Lightroom 4 and Elements, so have plenty of options for adjustment. I will do as suggested and let you have another look.

I have now uploaded a 'variant' which I think is better, can I make that the main picture or do I need to delete the original and start again??

Putting your modification up as a variant is the best idea, Anne, and I have to say it looks good now.
Don't delete anything, having the two to see helps others to understand the corrections you have made.
