Tree by the Lake Bank

By Hilmar
Image taken with tree in the front to act as a frame and add to the foreground. Not sure is the background is sharp enough.

Quite a pleasant scene, Hilda, and you have not only used the tree to good effect, but have positioned it nicely in the left third. Yes, it's a nice idea to use the tree to frame the picture. Also, your river bank is approximately on the bottom third vertically, so well done there. I like the way the river goes off into the distance, taking the viewer's eye deeper into the image.
What a shame there wasn't a little boat on the water, to the right, or even a duck in the foreground water, just to give you a focal point. Another thing that would be great in this scene is a stronger reflection in the water and, if you get the chance to try again, you might consider this. Maybe no need for the boat or duck then.
The image appears underexposed. Also, you have only shown a small amount of the river bank and I would like there to be more of it included.
Your tree is in focus, Hilda, and it isn't absolutely necessary for the rest of the scene to be in focus. It doesn't look bad to me, and the background trees are more in focus in my modification, but I would have expected the foreground reeds to be sharper. A smaller aperture would help to get everything in focus, if that is your desire.
In my modification, I added canvas to the bottom (as mentioned above), used a simple Smart Photo Fix to brighten and sharpen the image, then ran the burn tool over the background trees because they looked a bit washed out.

Hi Pamela,

Thank you very much for your advice, I will take it on board for the next time I visit the area, also thanks for your help in improving the image.

Hilmar I have no critique to offer for the picture, just a suggestion. Next time you visit the spot, have a picnic rug, some sandwiches, a drink, set the camera on a tripod with a cable release, enjoy the view, the nature and if a boat or a bird passes shoot it. A photograph is a miniscule fraction of time in our lives. What you do with the rest of the time can be as pleasing. Enjoy it.

A decent effort. Add a little contrast and a subject - the boat will do. The scene is a background in this case, so can be soft, the tree does act as a lead in, and is sharp, but you lack a subject.

Thanks for your comments. Pity alright that I have no subject especially as I am told swans and ducks are regular visitors to that spot. Will try again another day.

Morning Hilda,

I agree with the above, this is a very pleasent scene and you have used the tree to good effect, well done.

Hilda I think you could have maybe turned slightly to you right placing the tree more at the adge of the image and capturing more of the lake/river etc (see mod). I'm not sure how you've processed this image but you have lost to a certain extent that fantastric sun light on the tree, by altering the tones in "Elements" etc you can bring that back.

Take care
