Trials of a wildlife photographer

By rnomis
In the Brazilian tourist city of Porto Seguro on the banks of the Buranhém River is a mangrove swamp roughly half the size of the main city area. Most people never see this part although there are some well maintained colonial style houses and shops with a few bars set up on the wide pavement alongside the mangroves. There are the remains of a few houses next to the swamp but a large part of the area between the pavement and the mangrove proper seems to be a dumping ground for building materials and rubbish thrown by the residents, bar owners and tourists alike. In amongst this rubbish live a large population of Swamp Ghost crabs (caranguejo-uçá). THey are quite nervous creatures. I sat on the wall for a long time waiting foe them to come out of their burrows only for a passing tourist to shout "Look! caranguejo". Where upon, they all quickly dissapeared back into their burrows meaning I had to start the whole process again!
