I made chocolate truffles for the first time yesterday (test run for a christmas pressie). I think the recipe should come with a health warning - they're so addictive! I used brandy cream in them instead of cream and brandy, but they're so tasty (and I don't even like brandy!). What better excuse for a photo session than Christmas and truffles?

Anywho, I found this little candle in a drawer and used a gift box lid as a jazzy background. They're standing on my chopping board, which is nice and reflecty. I could also control the lighting a certain amount by adjusting the window blind. At this point it was closed, so it's just candle light Smile

EXIF data on the way, along with a version featuring only two truffles (to be uploaded tomorrow if I remember!). I think I prefer this one, composition-wise.

I didn't remove the 'colour cast', as I wanted a warm, Christmassy, luxurious feel to the photo. Making the whites white didn't get the effect I wanted from the image. Focus was aimed at the middle truffle, and depth of field was picked to blur out the background, while not being too shallow.

Let me know what you think! Constructive critique is encouraged and appreciated! Grin

(On a side note, I think there should be a food & drink category on EPZ....)

Yes, I'm drooling at these too, and a previous apple streudel. Can't offer constructive critique I'm afraid but you get a vote for holding my attention and lingering over it so it works Smile

Thanks everyone! Grin Sorry for teasing you all Wink

Mum, it was between reflecty and reflectable. Reflecty won for being more happy sounding Grin

Hi Rachel,

I spotted this the other day, bookmarked it and didn't get back to it!

You've really done a good job with this. I like the use of selective focus to emphasise the farthest truffle and the lighting, or rather, the lack of it, is spot-on.
I also agree that adjusting the white balance to suit the shot has worked well. In fact, I tend to use the "custom" white balance option in Lightroom a lot of the time.
I like too, the improvised setting. Not just the result but the thought that's gone into it. Box lids and discarded wrapping paper do have their uses! And where would we be without a "reflecty" (!?) chopping board!
Seriously, this is really good work. I've been looking for inspiration recently and I don't know any more than you do about setting up things like this but you can obviously achieve great results without spending much, if any money, so perhaps I should take a leaf out of your book and have a go at something similar.
Well done.
