Tudor House Cannon

By pamelajean
(Continuing my Southampton series. Most of the pictures in this series are taken from “the old town”).

This is a splendid old bronze cannon in the gardens of the Tudor House Museum in Southampton. It was made for Henry V111 in 1542 by the Italian, Arcanus of Cesena, and was later presented to Southampton.
The carriage on which it stands was presented in 1826 by John Fleming, MP for the county of Hampshire.
Being on the bank above the river, it overlooks the stop where the Mayflower and Speedwell would have taken in their passengers.

With thanks to all who looked, voted and commented, and especially those who gave User Awards to my amaryllis upload.

Pamela.

Kudos!

A magnificent looking bronze cannon. You have chosen a good viewpoint, so we are looking along the barrel of the gun, and showing of its size. I wonder if it was ever fired in anger, or just a show-piece.
