Tudor House Museum 1

By pamelajean
(Continuing my Southampton series. Most of the pictures in this series are taken from “the old town”).

This Grade 1 listed timber-framed building is Southampton’s most important and oldest historic building.
Built around 1492 by Sir John Dawtrey (famous for overseeing the building of the Mary Rose), it has been a public museum since 1912, after William Spranger sold it to the town
The museum closed to the public in 2002 for restoration, and remained closed for 9 years.
The creaking wooden floor, so warped it induces a slight feeling of seasickness when walked on, is just one of the idiosyncrasies kept in the restoration process.

I remember that seasick feeling as a child, in some rooms once you started walking there was no stopping.
It was free admission then... Probably that's why we went so often.
Good to see it again.

It looks an interesting place to visit, going by your introduction, even with wonky floors! Lovely image of the timber framed building, with its lead window frames.
