On 22nd December 1988 this became the most famous place inn the world.
The image of the plane cockpit "Maid Of The Seas" lying in a field opposite this church was flashed around the world.
It had crashed there the night before whilst the main body of the plane went just over 2miles further and landed on the town of Lockerby after having been blown out of the sky by a bomb.

That morning, this church was the base to a small contingent of the huge search and recovery operation and the minister's wife handed them the keys to the manse next door so they had access to toilet facilities whilst she went to join her husband administering to the townspeople.

It was small acts of kindness such as this that brought home the magnitude of the situation for the locals - they were never going to be able to get away from it ….. to switch off the TV/radio to avoid it all ; they were never going to be able to forget the sights, the sounds, the smells -- they live with it every single day.

The extremes of humanity - the good and the evil are summed up for me in this lowly and remote wee church.

I have added 'options' now

Sadly there is a Canadian connection to this crude and evil hate crime. TG
