Your beautiful captures makes me feel old as I was a witness to (and practiced) this way of printing when ending my graphic schooldays.
The next step 'up' was the Lynotype machine (I believe) that melted lead whilst typing away on a machine build like a monster about 10 feet tall and had a lot of moving parts making all types of noises and horrible smells. Then, not long after that the first computers came and changed the printers-world.
