nicely done

I've never really got still life stuff right, maybe I go to the wrong places!

really like the feel to this shot though, has a feeling of age to it.

reckon it's a bit top heavy though? maybe crop the window a bit as most of the action's in the lower part of the shot?

Know the feeling Ade, thought I'd typed a reply and nothing appeared!

I think your right re the crop, should have been cropped just below the divider in the window, to a square format - Thats what you get for processing at 2 in the morning when you can't sleep.

Tho it is quite heavily cropped as it is. The main problem I was behind a barrier with the attendant watching me like a hawk, else I would have rearranged thinks a touch I would have liked to have been a bit lower too.
1 Nov 2009 6:57PM
Don't you dare crop it.... you need the space above as a balance to all the business below and also to add the atmosphere.... leave it alone, it's superb as it is... the empty space above balances perfectly the weightiness of the lower half.

Thanks David Smile. ButI just uploaded a variant as you were typing the comment - tho I do prefer the original as the diagonal of the table edge unbalances the image , I think.

Just came back for another look Nick....and just wanted to add....I really like the inclusion of all the window/curtain...and agree with David it does balance.
Just mho Smile

Thanks Alley, I do tend to give images a bit more space than some, just personal preference - I'm still not sure which is my favourite

Wonderful still life Nick and fully agree with David and Alley V1 it has a far better balance to it than V2

V2 is a good shot but at the end of the day it's a still life of a kettle, a bottle and other bits and bobs.... V1 is all of that and atmosphere.... I rest my case.

Thanks David, Les, Mike & Alley. Yes I agree on No1 - the comment on the atmosphere, well that is what I was trying to convey it was grubby, weather worn, and it had the feel of my grand mothers farmhouse kitchen, which is why I really took to the venue.

Thanks everyone ..well I didn't expect this one to create quite such debate, I was expecting more controversy over the processing than the crop.

Thanks Alley, for all your comments Wink

But on a semi-serious note, its true pictures speak louder than words, by putting up the variant I think helps demonstrate the reason why V1 works.

Thats rather nice Nic, you have captured the feel of the place well, no need for a crop on it, the window lends a sense of place to the overall composition, love the new technique btw...

An excellent bit of work, Nick, as we can expect from you. Like the effect, almost mono with just a hint of colour, works very well and suits the subject.

Thanks everyone.

Yes its always worth trying something, experimentation is how we learn. (Or it is for me) There was some milage in your initial comment Ade, but it was more the angle - I would have prefered to have been a fraction lower and to the right. As it was the lens was resting on the barrier.

Top job Nick. A still life with bags of character...the processing is excellent and in keeping with the subject. You're on a good roll - congrats.
