Unusual Guest

By cuffit
I know that the sight of a bird feeder is the kiss-of death for a wildlife photo but, hey, it was an unusual visitor and it is Lockdown after all. A Greater Spotted Woodpecker - I have tried to catch him arriving or leaving and have failed at 1 and 2 thousandths of second - just too quick.

Great spotted woodpeckers can take quite a while to become confident. They will often, given time, settle down. I can't see any red on the back of this ones head so it is a female.
A good shot, no problem with the feeder but the background is a little intrusive.

Many thanks for the kind comments and votes for the Unusual Guest, they are all very much appreciated. I enter some photos into competitions (not nature or wildlife shots though) and it is from that arena that my comment came from. Thanks, Mike, for the tip on male or female, I shall watch out for the red on the head, on the next visit and, yes, the background is messy despite a low-ish aperture. I do need to look for a cleaner spot.
