Upper Swaledale

Field system and field barns in near Gunnerside is Swaledale in the Northern Yoprksire Dales.
The drystone walls date back hundreds of years since enclosure. The Yorkshire Dales National Park help farmers maintain the barns which were used for wintering cattle and storage of hay from the surrounding meadow.

When we crossed the hills to find Butter Tubs there were many of these buildings, the visitor info. board, at the top, indicated that they where built to accommodate cows over winter, so, became known as "cow houses", and I would imagine the cows were grateful for the shelter.
