I'm not mad about the second image tbh - it isn't all that well balanced and the elements aren't giving much of a narrative or emotional resonance.
The first image is far more successful IMO - there's a nice atmosphere and considering there's such a wide dynamic range, the important bits of the subject are pretty well exposed. I do think there's probably too much of the dark landing to the left of the image, which for me pulls the overall tonal balance too much away from the figure. The modification is mostly done to show how it might look cropped. I don't think the toning adds anything at all to your original, but it's there simply as an alternative take.
You get my vote for image #1!
