Vertical Basalt

By Philip_H
Columnar basalt at Reynisfjara, near Vik in southern Iceland.

Perhaps the most famous basalt columns in the world are the Giant's Causeway on the northern coast of Ireland, in which the vertical joints form polygonal columns and give the impression of having been artificially constructed.

Thanks for all the C&Cs on 'Locked in Love'.

Best wishes,
Philip

Super place, so under rated by landscape photographers the north west coast line is stunning. It's been a while since last trip, that's got me thinking.....

I thought it was a cityscape from the thumbnail, and even when viewed large it still looks like a conglomeration of tall buildings, such a marvellous natural feature.

If you ever get to Alert on Elsmere Island, 450 miles from north pole, there are rolling mountains with six sided crystals growing
in clumps together to six and eight inches. These columns of yours are far more regular and dense. yet may have grown in the same way over thousands of years.
