VIETNAM 2013 #137

By JN_CHATELAIN_PHOTOGRAPHY
About 6 km from Chau Doc, there is a 230m-high mountain rising above the green rice paddies of Vietnam and Cambodia. It is called Nui Sam (Sam Mountain).

There are many pagodas and temples around the “mountain” as it is a place for pilgrimage. The Sam Mountain Lady Ceremony is held every April of the Lunar Calendar (May for us).

At the foot of Sam Mountain in Vinh Te Village stands the colourful Tay An Pagoda built in 1847. The pagoda is guarded by two elephants: one black and one white. Inside, there are 100s of Buddha's and other statues.
Like all Vietnamese pagodas, it’s full of fervent worshippers. The smell of incense is quite overwhelming.
