VIETNAM 2013 #158

By JN_CHATELAIN_PHOTOGRAPHY
The photos are about the pagoda and temple at the top of Ba Den Mountain.

I like the atmosphere around pagodas especially those having a connection to an ancient and romantic legend:

Once upon a time, a young woman called Denh was the devout daughter of an officer.

Denh fell in love with a guard officer's son from the Trang Bang Area. Her family put pressure on her to prevent the marriage. In despair, she entered a monastery in the mountains and became a nun. She remained at the monastery until her death.

The Nguyen Dynasty ordered that a mould of her body should be cast in black bronze in her honor, giving her the status of Linh Son Thanh Mau or Saint Linh Son and the mountain was named Black Lady Mountain or Black Virgin Mountain.

Ba Den Mountain has special significance to the Vietnamese Buddhist population. There are many shrines on the way up to the top of the mountain and various pagodas, temples and a giant white sleeping Buddha.
