Violated Jewish Cemetery

By handlerstudio
Over the weekend, a Jewish Cemetery, here in Philadelphia, was vandalized. Hundreds of gravestones were knocked over and many were actually broken. This is a small and, by American standards, old cemetery. It is one that over the years i have driven passed hundreds of times going to one of my metal finishers (remember, I make furniture of aluminum and wood), and noticed many graves having settled, leaning this way and that. This is different. Last week, a cemetery in St. Louis was similarly vandalized. After the violation here, Jewish Community Centers around the country had bomb threat called in. The good news is the response by people. The Muslim community has been tremendously supportive. I am not a very observant Jew. I belong to a Reconstructionist synagogue, and have been a lifetime atheist. And, my feelings, walking through, and photographing, were very deeply disturbed. There was press from around the world, local TV stations, and people, mostly Jewish walking around. Among us, the talk was who did this. We may never know who the actual vandals were.

But there is NO QUESTION whose hands might as well have done this----and it is our president, Donald Trump. The messages of hate, of disdain, of violence and bigotry since the beginning of his campaign, and particularly since his victory have resulted in a seriously marked uptick in incidents of hate crimes. Not to mention his attempted Muslim travel ban (fortunately overturned by the Federal Court, at least for now). I am watching his speech before Congress right now, and he condemned the desecration. I don't believe a word of it. He has also let loose out of control airport security personnel and immigration officials, that some in the press here have liked to Abu Graib.

Sorry to go political here.....but for those of my friends around the world, you need to get this perspective. This man has no business being president. The evil his is trying to bring on has no precedent in the history of this country.

A well shot image of this unnecessary vandalism - the write up is excellent and I agree that Donald Trump is not someone to be trusted or admired - unfortunately some voters seem to have fallen for his rhetoric. Irene

Thanks for the details, Peter.

Oh how sad this is to look at, if there are relatives still around then my heart felt sympathies go to them. For those who are buried there hopefully they know nothing of this unnecessary vandalism.

That is so sad. What did they hope to achieve? Like all crimes, from dropping litter, graffitti and vandalism through to murder and rape, until there is a proper, enforced, and visible deterrent, such mindless actions by the brain dead will continue. I wonder why Nature, by natural selection, hasn't removed these morons from the gene pool.

It's appalling! It's something happening in Europe too.Sad
I wonder what they think about what will happen to them if caught?
I suspect it's the same 'Cult' that's unravelling Civilisation in Europe and the UKSad

I blame those who support or cause such vandalism and brutality to happen by their pitiful frame of mind and speeches all over the world, no matter who they are, Peter.

"First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

"Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

"Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

"Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me. "

Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) was a prominent Protestant pastor who emerged as an outspoken public foe of Adolf Hitler and spent the last seven years of Nazi rule in concentration camps, despite his ardent nationalism. (from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum website.)

If we are not political beings, it can happen again and again.

I believe it is essential that we translate our beliefs into words and actions, and if that means telling the powerful that they are wrong, that is what we should do.

The only way to overcome evil is through principled action, painstaking and controlled. As soon as we respond to attacks on civilisation in uncivilised ways, we lose the very thing we seek to protect.

With you all the way, Peter.

Very disturbing write up Peter. I heard, just part of something on the news yesterday, regarding our Canadian children crossing the border. And some schools here are not allowing it. There's strange things happening since Trump was elected.

Persecution never leaves our shores, it is worldwide and disturbing. Minority and ill informed groups are usually responsible for this mindless behaviour. Education has not been strong enough with past history. An image of power and evidence, we never learn, Peter.

I cry....
Firstly, you know that I am not Jewish, but follow a very tolerant religion. I found this the most appealing news so far----
I am blaming Mr. Bannon and his pal Mr. Sessions---I do not believe our presumed president --certainly hope he did not direct these atrocious activities, although his bad mouth and poor choices have set such in motion.
How embarrassing to see the current most hated out loud community step up first to help with repairs!

Bravo to the Muslim community-- and I noted recently on FB--Boys End at the Westtown School flies a banner reading LOVE THY NEIGHBOR!!!

Thank you for posting this image. More importantly, thank you for this heartfelt, well-crafted, articulate commentary.
Do not apologize for the politics. These things have to be said. We must not remain silent. We must all stand with those among us who are under attack. The rhetoric coming from Trump is giving hate mongers the green light to yell "get out of my country" before murdering a young engineer and wounding another.

I hope you and yours are well.
Very sad to see these images, Peter.
I agree with John's (Dudler) above quote & comments.

I wonder ? Did we have this going on so prevalently under previous last two U.S administrations ???
My prayers go out to the American people when I see this kind of wanton ignorance and hate... Not what America stands for in my mind. So well Documented by you Peter.
