Votive

By mrswoolybill
St Mary's Chapel is a 12th Century ruin at the top of Jesmond Dene. It marked the site of a reported apparition by the Virgin Mary, and for centuries it was a centre of devotion. (Newcastle' s Pilgrim Street marks the start of the pilgrims' route up from the quayside towards the chapel.)
Nowadays it attracts a curious selection of votive offerings and commemorations, some rather weird, some beautiful. This rosary is suspended from a corbel high in the ruins.
This one presented an interesting problem, as the rosary beads hang at a slightly different angle to the cross. Can't explain that one...
Thanks for looking,
Moira

The great thing about life is a simple thing has so much more meaning and as photographers we can display that. Tou image takes a simple cross and turns it into so much more with it's tones and pov. Great job.

being a speaker of English as a foreign language, TIL (Today I Learned) that rosary is defined as [a form of prayer psalter used in the Catholic Church] and a string of knots or beads used to count the component prayers..
p.s. and a fine shot, to be sure, very appropriately done in b&w

And as a native speaker... albeit with limited vocabulary, I learnt that Votive means 'offered or consecrated in fulfilment of a vow.'

Did you have to carry a ladder to get this shot? 😁😁

I like the way you have anchored the beads in the top left corner.

A very well taken and presented image, Moira. Fascinating and intriguing.
The Virgin Mary seems to have made appearances all over the world.

Very well captured and presented. It shows the length people will go, to express their religious fervour.

Lovely emotional image. I can also see a hand with it's thumb rubbing the beads. Maybe in prayer.

We are comfortably settled into a holiday cottage in Suffolk. A glass of wine, a plate of antipasti, dinner on its way. And I have found a good shadow to photograph. Life is good.
Thanks to everyone who has called in here today, and special thanks to Ollie and Joline for their UAs.

No. But I didn't attempt it the first time I saw it, I knew my standard lens was a wee bit too short. So I returned, properly equipped.
The kink is, I suspect, in the loop holding the cross. I straightened this using the cross for reference, I guess I should have used the rosary beads.
Leo, I don't think the Russian Orthodox Church has any equivalent of the rosary? I know that small household icons (the 'red corner') are used for personal prayers.
