Waking Up..

By ejtumman
Marbled White (Melanargia galathea) on Field Scabious

Taken early yesterday morning, just as the sun came over the hill at Aston Rowant nature reserve. This is one of a number of shots I took as the sun hit the butterfly, and it started to open its wings. I just love this warm light.

ISO 400
Shutter Speed 1/320
f./16.0
214mm

The Marbled Whites natural habitat is grassland, and while I moved grass away at the time of taking the photo, I decided to leave some in the background to show the natural habitat.

Never properly tried butterfly photography before, not with an SLR anyway, but I enjoyed it. a bit different to the usual plain flowers ;o) I spent about an hour photographing this particular butterfly.. about 2 minutes after this shot was taken it had warmed up sufficiently and it flew off.

Cropped and adjusted the levels in photoshop.

Very nice shot, well taken. Did you sharpen this at all in PS? I'm still finding my macros need a touch of unsharp mask. Also what parameters on the 350D did you use? (Sorry for pestering!)

Thanks for the comments..

Jim, I use the parameters where everything is set to 0, so no in-camera sharpening or colour enhancement. Sometimes I find I have to use USM, but this one didn't need anything..

Beautifully handled, and I admire your dedication being up there before the sunrise.

Your decision about the grass in the background works for me - far enough out of focus to avoid distraction, but still a hint of the surroundings.
