Wasp on Hibiscus

By Ashfield
I live in Spain on the Costa Blanca, so the weather is nearly always very good . I took this photo in my garden.I was trying to get a shot of a wasp going into the flower but I noticed that they don't, they just land on the leaves. I don't think this is particularly good but I rather liked the colours and it was hand held. Apart from cropping I haven't done anything else to it.

Don't put yourself down, it's not that bad!

It's a bit soft overall and the point of focus would seem to be closer to his tail than his head.
You say that you haven't done anything except crop it. I'd suggest that you try sharpening it a little and crop a chunk from the top.
I've uploaded a mod. in which I've done all of that.
I've also quickly cloned a couple of bits in the background (could be a lot better with more time) and desaturated it using the red channel only.
Hope this helps.

Bren.

I like it...not the bug, but it's nice and vibrant. Smile

This is actually quite good. Colours and composition very nice. OK, it needs to be a bit sharper - you have a tiny bit of general blur which is almost certainly camera movement and a touch of over exposure showing on the highlights. Using the kit lens, this is quite an achievement - not meant for close up.

Ideally, a macro lens - very expensive, and a tripod or i often use a monopod. Monopods are quite cheap and can give you several stops extra sharpness by supporting the camera on the ground.

The wasp is standing strangely? Only front legs grasping, the rest just hanging.

I think this is a really good picture and you are been way to hard on yourself. I have uploaded a MOD as to how i would have composed it but great job!

Hi Tony,

Is this the first one in your pf since 09 or were you just waiting for for of these horrible things Wink , sorry I'm a bit biased as I'm allergic to wasp etc stings. Wink

Tony you have some good advice from above and I agree with Frank about the crop, as stated, it's not a hard and fast rule but if things are looking left or right a lot of the time it works better if they have some image to look into. Like Frank I have added some to the left but I have cooled down the background and added more vibrance to the wasp.

Take care

Martin
