Waxwing Fluffed and Relaxed

By tonyguitar
Waxwings are fairly high strung and alert birds. This cedar wax ham is annoyed with my proximity [ raised crown ], but he is oddly at ease, fluffing and grooming at the same time. You can see the red wing dots and yellow dipped tail. Normally they are tightly feathered, sleek and ready for flight. TG

Brilliantly timed and caught!

(I have heard of these gorgeous birds roosting in the middle of Exeter during the winter, but have yet to actually find them!)

Most people miss waxwings because they are quick and stealthy. They flit in and out of a tree near you and you tend to think 'sparrow'. The key to notice waxwings is their very quiet high pitched twitter, almost similar to a humming bird sound. Always listen for a soft high pitched twitter and you may soon discover Waxwings. Good luck.

Thanks for your backing. Better photos to come I hope. TG

Well timed capture, Tony, and informative description. Haven't heard a humming bird yet let alone a waxwing Smile
