Way Out 2

By conrad
This one's for Mel (mellyleth).

I had something like this more or less in mind already, and then Mel expressed her uncertainty about the use of this doorway in one of my FishEye & Art series images, and yesterday she suggested using more white in my photo titled Way Out .

So, combining her suggestions and my own ideas, here it is: Way Out 2!

Hope you like it - but of course any and all comments (and mods) are welcome!

Thanks for looking,

P.S. If you do make a mod, you'll notice that even the 1000 pix version isn't a very big file. That's basically because with all the white there's not a lot of data in the file.

Conrad is the slightly grey diagonal just above the doorway supposed to be there?

That's the first doorway, Cheryl, leading to the second doorway that you see. Will admit that it's not very clear - maybe the high key effect I inadvertently caused is a bit too strong.

P.S. Just had a look at your mod (thanks!) - I suppose that is indeed better. If something is not very clear, maybe taking it out is better. And don't worry - I think a mod is worth more than a click! Wink

OK, I see it now the first doorway, but I think in that case you have over-done it slightly.

Oh well some compromise needed between us here to find a working solution Wink)

Oh, we'll get there. I think I need to either make the first doorway more visible, or take it out altogether, like in your mod. I'll have a think and see what I come up with when I'm home from work...

Just looked at the mod and I'm really not sure how to sum this up so I'm going to waffle...
Cheryl's mod looks too clean and as such is just a door in a white room but I can see her point about removing the grey strip, that was my first though. However, having looked at the mod the grey strip actually makes you want to look further, it almost pulls you into the picture, without it I dont think it works. Waffle over. K.

OK done another mod Wink)

This time tried to make the first doorway more noticeable, probably overdone it, but not sure.

I think I should have left some more of the right-hand shadow of the first doorway now looking at it again.

Thanks, Ian!

K - Thanks very much for your insight! Looks like you've done a more thorough analysis of the image than I have so far... I was just carrying out an idea. Interesting. Yes, I do like the first doorway and felt it added something, but Cheryl has a point that it's not very clear. But I like your reasoning about the first doorway almost pulling you into the picture. Hmmm, I can feel more PhotoShop work coming... Wink

Edit: Cheryl - just saw your second mod. (We should have a warning system for that kind of thing. Big red light flashing on your screen to tell you there's a new mod, or something like that!) I think I agree with your own conclusion that this is slightly o.t.t. But it does make a point, which I'll consider tonight when I look at it at home. Thanks!

Haha, thanks for this Conrad! This is very interesting and I like it. It wasn't exactly what I had in mind (I thought of keeping the black background from your previous shot and having the view from outside the door completely white, but you probably knew that, and this is your take on it after all and not mine..).
I quite like Cheryl's second mod and I think the shadow at the top needs to be there. The only crit I have is that I can see a big rectangle around the doorway (which I'm sure isn't supposed to be there), which looks like something you've done in Photoshop. It shows up on my work monitor, but I would have to look at it on my better monitor at home to get a more realistic view.

Good idea though and I like the abstract nature here. Keep them coming!

Mel, a big rectangle? Your monitor obviously shows up things mine doesn't. (Not sure if that's an advantage or a disadvantage...) Anyway, I'm not through yet with this idea, I'll keep messing with it for one or two more days, I think... Wink

You know what I think could work? If you could make the wall/floor join line just visible, leading away from the first door towards bottom left (or wherever it goes).

The problem with making the foreground door more noticable is that the second door fits too perfectly within the frame and they end up looking like part of the same thing.

Good effort though, I do like these minimalist shots.

For me, presonally I wouldn't change a thing. This is just fantastic. It makes you pause and think and draw some philosophical conclusions...really loved it!

Karthik - Thanks! Great compliment.

Ian - I like your suggestion. I'll have to try it out sometime - don't know when, because my wife has just informed me that the pc at home has given up the ghost! :-(

Like this a lot - very abstract. I do think that Cheryl's 1st mod is the best so that it just shows one door in a sea of white.

Ha! Just viewed it at home and it looks much better, but I can still just see a trace of that rectangle I mentioned (but maybe my eye is telling me it's there because I saw it before..??)

Thanks, Tom and Andrew!

Hi Mel, thanks for checking - if you still see it, I'll just assume you have better monitors both at work and at home than I do. I'll try to adjust something so that I can see it as well and remove it. Thanks!
