Wet Sunday Morning

By Observer
This photo was taken on Sunday morning after the Cumbrian floods...The doors you can see on the right hand side were part of the function room at the Whitewater Hotel...in the middle of the picture is the bridge which runs through Lakeland village, the water running over the top is the river which had backed up like it was against a dam. Very scary...

Oh dear!

This is even more impressive after looking at Google maps - https://www.google.com/maps/@54.2559985,-2.9903352,3a,66.8y,127.83h,75.09t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sI0C5fBPsppsWWT76BlMvrg!2e0

Technically, opening the aperture a fraction and going for a higher shutter speed might make for fractionally higher quality, and a touch of plus compensation would open up the midtones, though the sky might blow.

I'll see what I can do with a mod...

This is scary and well done for getting out and taking the shot. I do feel sorry for all the people involved. I've uploaded a mod and I hope you like it.

This is a really good reportgae shot. Im sure a newspaper would have been interested in it.

Youve got it all in the shot, and it tells the story.

The rest is just some tweaking to get the lower area a bit brighter, - you used +0.3, and perhaps a bit more could have been used. Colour balance and a bit of saturation can help too.

Its also a good candidate for a mono.

Thanks for all the comments and mods...

Slightly brighter works for me technically but too bright loses form in the water foam.

Making the sky too blue by increasing the saturation looks lovely but it makes the picture look like it was a summers day...which it was most certainly not and I feel it does not add to the true storyline.

I like the overall effect of B & W...I think this would work well with a large print...but not so good on a thumbnail...good to see what the picture might look like as news print.

Good record. Ideally, as an image rather than pure reportage, needs a bit more brightness, but a delicate balance, as you say, to keep highlight detail.

Mono? Why. Is it an effect shot or a reportage record. To record the events, which is surely what this is about, colour! we see in colour.

Thank you for your comments...your thoughts are virtually identical to my own...

I suspect the brightness issue is possibly a function of my screen on my PC which I use for editing..
