What a Crap Month

By achieverswales
Well friends I am back! What a month of expense, first I had to renew my computer, then the Turbo went on the car, a week in Bruges with torrential rain and snow only had about six hours of fine weather in the evening to get any photos, then I find my Brother is in Hospital very ill, because of the weather I could only get about 30 shots mostly indoors I am gutted, it is about fifteen years since I was here last, I could not believe how expensive it is now, it has to rank as one of the most expensive places in Europe, a taxi for a mile trip 10 Euro a cheese and tomato pizza and two small beers 51 Euro, to eat any where in this square add another 25% at least, looking on the bright side I am alive and kicking. This is the world famous De Markt in Bruges, see For info.

Great captures, Trev, but what a disappointment for you. Sorry to hear your brother is in hospital, do hope he makes a very speedy recovery, and that things start to look up for you again. Carol

Welcome back.
So sorry to hear all your troubles - hope your brother will be OK.
That was a real pity about the weather, with so much to see and photograph.
Been to Bruges for a day - so lovely to see your night images.
Lovely sweeping curve in V1 taking us in to the city scene.
V2 and V3 take us in for an overview with lots of wonderful buildings
and are those all bars and restaurants in V3? I like the starbursts
with the street lights.

This photo is certainly a fine one, in spite of your troubles. Hope things improve soon for all of you.

Thanks everyone, Kate they are all very expensive Restaurants, the one in V3 with the illuminated sign we ate there the night this was taken, mushroom omelette chips and salad, cheese croquet chips and salad, two glasses of red wine cost 77 Euro! Nearly dropped my camera. Anyone not sure about getting starburst effects! The more you stop down the better the effect, about f16 is ideal.

SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR VISIT. It touches me deeply.
It is over 11 years now that I left Flanders, the tram used to be about 130 in Brugge. Food was quite reasonable if you went for mosselen (mussels) or some back street restaurants.
next time please contact me, I might be able to tell you where you get a reasonable menu! Also for turbos... but no I'm not advertising here. I used to work for Belgium's biggest turbo remanufacturer.
Hope your brother is soon to recover!!
And yes, they are remarkable night shots, never did one like this in all the years I lived in Flanders, got plenty from Gent, the coast etc but never there.. it was sort of tourists only in the evening.

Oh dear, what a series of catastrophes Sad I thought Switzerland was expensive, but this sounds even worse! I have fancied Bruges myself, but have have been put off by the extortionate single room supplements - around ⅓ extra on the basic holiday! I begrudge paying a single room supplement, but draw the line at that and refuse to pay it Sad
Anyway, at least you've got some very nice night shots, Trev Wink

Good to have you back, Trev, but sorry to hear of all your woes, and I do hope your brother is making headway.
Bruges would offer so many wonderful photographic opportunities had the weather been more clement.
Good to see these night time shots.

Sorry to hear about all of the bad news Trev.

I've been there several times and the last one was only for a few hours on our way back from Luxembourg and we were shocked at the prices!

This was in 2010 and we were charged the equivalent of 12 for two small coffees!

Excellent set by the way.

We stayed in Antwerp and day-tripped to Bruges! Smile Didn't realise it was that expensive!!

Sounds like a hard few days (being polite here), hope things get better, especially for your brother.

Sorry to hear about all your woes, when I visited Bruges many years ago it was certainly a lot cheaper than it is know, I blame the Eurostar, making the City more excessible than ever before...

Hope that your brother gets well soon mate, chin up...

Sorry to hear of you brother and car problems Trev.

Brugge is a remarkable place for a city break in the summer and I have been there many times, it's such a shame that prices are on the rise but as your wonderful images show for a short break it is well worth it.

Blimey, I thought Paris was supposed to be the expensive place in Europe, sounds like it's got stiff competition here.

An excellent set of night shots showing this famous square in all its glory. Norway is another expensive place to visit, my folks did the coastal boat tour seven Easters ago and food and drink was so expensive there that they had to resort to taking leftover rolls and food from breakfast on the ship to have for their lunch each day!!!
