What's the buzz

"song from the 1973 Musical "Jesus Christ Superstar"
Along my walk through the St. Janskerk in Gouda moving to this stained glass
"Jesus in the Temple" by Digman Meynaert, Antwerpen, 1560. The upper part shows the middle of Discussion scribes the twelve year old Jesus. In the background are Mary and Joseph entered the temple, who were looking for their son. The lower section shows the portrait of the abbot with his name Saint Peter and Mary with the child.
Stained glass making is labor intensive and therefore costly. To finance the windows the church council were looking for sponsors. These sponsors were secular and spiritual rulers. The sponsors are in the lower part of the window that they financed displayed, which they showed how pious and powerful they were. In the Catholic period were this example Philip II and his wife, Mary Tudor, Duchess Margaret of Parma.
Later, after the Reformation, the sponsors were found in administrative organizations, such as the States of Holland, and several cities that hold a relationship with Gouda, such as Haarlem. William of Orange has funded no window but its symbols (orange apples) are incorporated into window 22. Some organizations moreover gave several churches, with stained glass windows. Some times as many as 27 churches, ranging from small village churches and powerful abbey churches.
