Wheal Owles.

By natureslight
Most people will recognise this mine in its guise of Wheal Leisure from the latest series of Poldark, its real name is Wheal Owles. The mine ceased production when disaster struck on 10 January 1893, the miners broke through into neighbouring Wheal Drea which was flooded. The ice cold water rushed into Wheal Owles and caused the air in the mine to become a gale, the air quickly travelled through the mine blowing out the candles and leaving the miners in darkness awaiting their fate. The miners working in the upper levels survived the onslaught but nineteen men and a boy lost their lives. Their bodies were never recovered.
