When you are a King

By kuipje
"sung by the White Plains 1971"

Koningsdag April 27th (King's day = The King, Willem-Alexander, birthday).
Since 1980 (that time it was Queen's day, Beatrix) the Royal family visit, on that day, one or more cities. All kind of activitiesare held on that day, games (incl. old fashion "koekhappen = a piece of cake or cookie is haging on a rope and people are blinded blindfold and have to try to eat that cake or cookie), concerts or demonstrations of local craftsmanship. But also (a kind of) fleamarket. People can sell anything they want, sitting on a blanket/chair, on the street. What fun is to see is children, selling their old toys/games/books or clothes, wearing Orange things (Orange = the Royal color. That color is really the name of a French town called Orange. Around the year 1500 Orange was a little Kingdom in the south of France, which was owned by the ancestors of the Royal family.)
When we had a Queen (Beatrix) it has held on April 30th, this is not HER birthday (Jan. 31) but her mother's (Juliana). In honour of her mother Beatrix decided that "Queens day" would remain on April 30th, and of course Jan. 31th is to cold. Nowadays we have a King and his birthday is on April 27th. Most of the time it's nice weather, but not this year. In my town, Bodegraven-Reeuwijk, it was dry but very cold. The fleamarket started at 8.00AM in a Bodegraven. I went there. It was not that crowded first but when the sun started shining more people came.
This is the first of a serie about King's day in Bodegraven and Reeuwijk. Other V's are more pictures of that day. Here is a link to a video about a Queen's day in Amsterdam
Hope you have a "Orange day" with lots of sun.

beautiful series of images.....love the idea of flea market, anywhere, anytime......something I will be seeing alot in 3 weeks' time when I return to Kathmandu Nepal. This time I will be visiting Kathmandu, Patan, Bhaktapur & Pokkara for 2 weeks, exactly 1 year after the massive earthquake. Smile

Hope you didn't swallow the pips!!! GrinGrinGrin

V5 is my favourite...We have `Orange Day' (12th July) to celebrate the Battle of the Boyne. A `Dutch' King called `Billy' caused a bit of chaos over here and they never forget!!!

Stay Safe an warm... the L2B can take off their Orange vests now! Grin

Great looking set Jos. As far as your lead is concerned. When you're king you can get mucky and eat whatever you like.
