Its a nice effort with a stock lens.
You asked how you could do better. The main improvement in general you could make is to get yourself a dedicated macro lens, - especially if you like close shots, flowers, etc.
For this particular shot, - the lighting is rather harsh, however you didnt let us know how it was lit or set up, so I cant comment on lighting. A couple of observations I can make: The whites are overexposed in parts; the colour is over saturated; the composition is too tight in the frame.
I have loaded a mod to address these area. I used the highlight tool in CS5, and curves, to reduce the highlights; saturation tool to reduce colour so its not "blooming"; and added black canvas to give the flower space, and compose it to place the flower off centre.
