Wild Africa - The Stare

By Gezina
Thank you so much for your kind response to the Pied Kingfisher + fish upload very much appreciated.
Portraits is defnitely not my strongpoint but I thought I'll have a go with this one Tongue - Ina
Very difficult to make full eye contact with wild baboons as they see it as a challenge to fight - they tend to avoid direct eye contact unless they are the dominat male in the troop - in wich case I'll probably avoid eye contact!

An interesting narrative to accompany this excellent portrait shot of the baboon, Ina: that look off camera probably results in a better shot than a full frontal gaze, and you have captured this individual with such excellent detail despite the strong side to back lighting.

Hi Ina , this is a cracking portrait, but I do feel having seen loads of portraits lately it would have been better if lit with 2 softboxes rather than the midday sun,olo regards gray.

my previous comment should have read; " I would suggest two soft boxes either side of the subject rather than the hars middy sun" GrinGrinGrinGrinGrin

That is one mean looking monkey Ina !! Well done to you for getting close enough for the capture. I think I am not too keen on these brutes. They always look mean to me.

All you need to do Ina is practice with Graham on the portraits, cant be much difference Wink
Seriously this is first class work and not the friendliest of beasts to get close to.
Detail and exposure first class

A first class portrait of this menacing beast, not a fellow to be trifled with

Nicely detailed portrait, Ina. You clearly intimidated the animal if it's avoiding eye contact with you!

ps: Seeing this made me shiver as I often have nightmares about Baboons chasing me - don't know why but perhaps I ought to see a shrink...
