I use Elements 10, so 12 is probably not much different...
In the Editor, select "Enhance" from the menu bar along the top.
Then from the drop-down menu, select "Adjust lighting."
That will give you a further menu, with 3 options. Select the first one... "Shadows/Highlights."
In the dialogue box that appears, there will be 3 sliders. Move the top one ( "Lighten Shadows" ) until it looks right to you... On my Elements 10, the starting value is preset to 25% rather than 0%, though I don't know why they did that. If yours is the same, don't worry about it, just move the slider to where you want it ( I would suggest maybe 20% ), then click "OK."
Then "File" / Save, then "File" / Close.
Job done.
