Winter beauty at Cadover

By wildatheart
Taken on a freezing cold winter day with the snow falling. I set my camera on a tripod and was hoping to capture the mystical setting.

Nice composition. Like the way the trees arch to frame the distance.

Gorgeous colours with nice composition and just the right hint of movement in the water.

I can feel the chill, no question. Well done.

I know Cadover well - that bit of Dartmoor that really is quite isolated - this is a fantastic image (not this year I guess) a very clever lead in taking the eye right to the heart of the image (the apparent source of the river) - I love the muted colours they just shout winter and the detail beneath the water in the fg - well that is a masterstroke. Imo this is just about 'on the button' maybe the slightest crop from the bottom to really snuggle in the lead in but otherwise fabulous.

What a stunning way to open your account - impressive

1st class alison ,really a superb image
Very nice, I think you have achieved waht you wanted, the eye follows the river right up through the trees and the feel is indeed very mystical.

Great work!

Welcome to epz

This is very nice, but there isn't anything "going on" so to speak, in the right of the frame, so I'd be tempted to crop off the right side to about a few feet away from that long rock in the river, to concentrate the eye more. Perhaps a crop from the bottom too, up to the edge of the left hand f/g rock?

I really like the misty tunnel of the river's course. Very nice Smile
Well done and welcome to EPZ!

Well-captured. I like the translucent water in the foreground of the photo. Welcome to the ePhotozine family.

A very well composed pic. I like the muted colours. It really does evoke an impression of winter. I think initially, my eye was drawn to the title.... not yet, please.

If you were to go back I think it would add some foreground impact if the camera were dropped to just a foot or so above the water level.

I've uploaded a mod; an attempt to artificially add some of the mysticism you sought.

Great shot which conveys the atmosphere of winter well. Water surface perfect and composition excellent. Makes me want to go out now and take photographs.

I see a lot of useful comments about this image already - Robert sums up the positive qualities of the shot, Dave makes some good suggestions and has given you a useful mod, and Pete (Goggz) has useful crop suggestions.

I've been thinking if there is anything I can add, and the only thing I can come up with, is making another mod to show you what the results of Pete's crop suggestions would be. I went just a little but further than he said and also took a little bit off the left-hand side, because I wanted to keep the point in the distance the river flows towards just slightly off-centre. I think the main advantage of Pete's suggestions is that with part of the width of the scene gone, the eye tends to be lead more easily towards a point in the distance, instead of looking at the whole width of the original scene.

Oh, for the mod I cropped the picture, as said, and adjusted contrast and midtones slightly. Nothing else done to it.

Forgot to add: This location could look spectacular in snow, if you can capture it in those conditions...
Thank you for your comments and suggestions, all taken on board. Unfortunately we don't have snow very often in Devon... it was snowing whilst I took this image but sadly it didn't settled.

Hello, Alison, what a beautiful first upload, bags of atmosphere and a well thought out composition. As has been said, it has a perfect lead-in. I personally like the elements such as the golden pebbles beneath the shallow foreground water and the interesting patterns made within the water by the subtle reflections. I think I can see touches of snow or frost on the bottom left rock. In my modification, I wanted to bring out the colours in the water, the blue and gold, as well as the green of the foliage either side. In so doing, I've taken away some of the misty background atmosphere. I cropped a little differently, a bit from the top and the right, I deepened the shadows and highlights, made a curves adjustment, saturated the colours and used the burn brush on the white rocks in the water. It's a little different from the other mods, but we all do tend to have different ideas, and I hope it meets with your approval.
Thank you Pamelajean, I really like the modification you made to the image! Yes I think it is definitely an improvement... and many thanks for the critique on my other images.
