Winter Express

By robincoombes
Saturday 4 February 2012. The met office had an amber warning for severe snow across the UK. The Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express was also due to travel northbound over the Settle and Carlisle line. The forecast was for the snow to begin falling after 10am which proved correct. Therefore it was an early rise to travel northward to arrive before the snow set in. We decided on a spot north of Lunds just below the summit at Ais Gill. By the time the train was due at 13.35, snow was falling thickly and a biting wind blowing. Just a few minutes down Black 5 45305 could be heard in the distance emerging from Moorcock Tunnel for the final assault to the summit. Seen here in true S&C winter conditions on the approach to Shotlock Tunnel the single Black 5 was making light work of her 11 coach load in such conditions no mean feat. It was then a quick retreat to a warm open fire for a delicious steak sandwich at the Black Swan and then on to Penrith to see the return trip. The journey home was a bit of a challenge with the M6 over Shap reduced to the single tracks of a vehicle in front. There was a large number of accidents strung out along the M6 as many drivers failed to take account of the treacherous conditions and by Junction 15 we had to manoeuvre our away around several lorries. All in all an interesting day, a 12 hour drive and a 604 mile round trip to see steam in all its glory.

i like the capture you have here but the black frame at the top and bottom of the shot i find very distracting you have some fine shots in your pf but the black top and bottom and sides ? ithink your shots would look far much better without this .
