Wish You Were Here ...

By sut68
A short break from the Lichfield Cathedral shots I have been posting of late.

This is by far from my best shot focus wise [these guys move so quickly] - it's a little soft around the eyes, but I just love the lighting and expression on this gibbons face ... he looks so lonely here ... but in fact, he was playing with another couple of gibbons in the next cage, by passing through this piece of willow?? to them and they'd pass it back somewhere else.

Have a great weekend everyone,

Good maybe - would be superb IMO if I had a faster lens and it was pin sharp, but as it is, I am fairly happy with it ... the shadows make this for me. Cheers though,

Looks great to me.
I like the fact the eye is clear of shadow and really holds the attention

You've done well to get a shot of these full stop. To actually get a cracker like this with excellent lighting is just too good, clever sod.....

Cheers guys and gals, sorry for the delay in getting back, but I've been a little busy this morning. As this image is doing 'so well' I can afford the time to respond to you individually.

Dan, not being too hard, more critical though ... helps me to improve [next time] ;-D

Roy, shadows missing the eye does it for me too.

Ali, sad but happy at the same time ... not easy to capture ;-P

Sean, he was as happy as a pig in mud, believe me.

Tony, not clever, just a bit lucky ... honest ;-D

Thanks all,

The shadows across his face emphasise the 'prison' feel. This is a brillient portrait full of pathos.

Cheers Martin, personally I like this one ... just seems that the rest of EPZ don't, never mind, thick skinned me ... [slopes of sobbing] ;-D

I agree with Martin above,it made me sad at first to think he was in a prison cell but reading your comments did lighten my feelings a little.
I like the shadows across his little face which enhance the 'imprisoned' look somewhat,a whistful expression..well captured.

Thanks Janet, it's one of those shots where, for me, all the components have come together to create a feeling of solitude - the wistful expression, the light and shadows and the hand reaching out.

He/she was actually in this enclosure with another two if I remember correctly, and in the neighbouring one was a similar number. He/she was having a ball pushing the twig through to the neighbours.

Have a great weekend,

Not easy to come away with a good'un at Zoo's (I spent an entire day taking rubbish at Chester Zoo a couple of years ago!), but this works very well.

There is no need for you to sob on this one Paul. The lighting and shadows are superb, and I can see no problem with the detail. I know it is a function of the long lens and aperture, but I also like the oof background.

Cheers Nick, sorry Hannah ... he/she was quite happy from what I could see. Martin, it's hard to get something decent from a zoo, 'specially when landscapes are your comfort zone [as with me] ... but this one I was pretty happy with, but it's gone down like a very heavy lead balloon ;-D

Nigel, the DoF is deliberate, as I wanted the subject isolated from it's surroundings to a degree, the lighting and the expression though are purely by luck.

Thanks you guys,

quite ironic that one of your best story telling shots gets less attention on here than your other work.

the shadow of the gauze on the little monkey's face says it all - just sat there loning for freedom.

One I'd missed, glad I found it though
