I am not sure which Woodpecker this is. In a book of bird photos I have it could be the Lesser Spotted but the red on the head is different and more like the Syrian Woodpecker which doesn't usually appear in the British Isles. Any help and comments on this would be useful. I have never seen a Woodpecker on our feeders before.

Author's Comment: Further research virtually confirms that the photo is of the Syrian Woodpecker Dendrocopos syriacus 23cm

I have had several comments elsewhere to tell me that I have wrongly identified the subject. It should be male Great Spotted Woodpecker. What upset my identification was the red on the top of the head. In a book of actual photographs of both woodpeckers the only one like my photo was the Syrian Woodpecker, but I have since seen and read that the male Great Spotted Woodpecker has the same marking on top of the head. Sorry for the error. John
