WW1 Diggers

By Wireworkzzz
A dilapidated old photo I restored. My grandfather is the one on the left. Wondering about the hat on the middle guy.
I found this very graphic hand written poem amongst my grandfathers possessions after he passed.

SHIPS THAT PASS IN THE NIGHT
A soldier lay on the battlefield of Belgiums war torn land,
no comarade heard his dying word as they ran in a mighty band
Across the bridge they took the ridge and dug in fast and hard
but no one knew, in mud like glue, lay their true and faithful pard
He lay there through the dark cold night and yet he felt no pain
but the ground was wet with bloody sweat and soaked with a crimson stain
A vision he saw through an open door of a river and a wonderful sight
for floating along in an endless throng were ships that pass in the night
There were ships of love and ships of hate and ships of sorrow and joy
But no one saw, so close to the shore
The dying soldier boy

" From these houses
nothing has been left
but some pieces
of wall.

From the men
I used to know,
there aren't many
left.

But from my heart
there is not a single cross missing,
because my heart is
the most blood stained
place. "

A moving tribute 😀

A quick Google suggests a "Slouch hat"... perhaps the one worn when not on duty??
