XL497 (041/R) Fairey Gannet AEW 3

By Tooma
Another shot from the Aviation Museum in Dumfries - yes, finally an aircraft, and it's an ex-Navy Fairey Gannet AEW 3. It was last based at HMS Gannet, a land based frigate, that's what the Navy calls its concrete warships, at Prestwick Airport in Ayrshire where they operate a fleet of helicopters. Its last sea deployment was on HMS Ark Royal.

The Gannet was built for anti-submarine warfare, the AS designation, and some including XL497/041 shown here, were fitted with radar, the big bulb under its belly, as Airborne Early Warning aircraft platforms; 44 examples produced, the AEW, and the 3 means it was fitted with an additional seat for an observer.

Power for the contra rotating blades was from a Hawker Siddley Twin Mamba engine.

Sad to see it looks like it's disintegrating! Needs a good lick of paint! Good record shot!

What an ugly duckling! No wonder it required so many propellers to get it off the ground? Good image of the plane, which I suppose by now is a rarity.
