A good story and an interesting location for shots.
The pits are in the far distance and still smallin the frame. Indeed the trees and buildings are more prominent. There is a lot of foreground too which dilutes the pits' presence in the frame.
You need to be closer. I don't know the location but as there is a housing estate close by there must be some way.
Having said that, as you've shot from a distance you do show how the pits tower over the houses which wouldn't be the case when shooting much closer in.
A subject worth exploring more and if youknow the area well I'm sure it won't take long to get 'the viewpoint' that really sets it off.
Maybe not in the evening though?
