Ye old chalk pit

By LouiseTopp
This is Salisbury district chalk pits. It was abandoned in the sixties, my granddad can still remember it working. Apparently chalk was mined to put in Talcum powder and roads etc. It is supposed to be haunted. A friend of mine walking past the old road one evening, saw a Victorian man pushing a bike in the direction of the pit. She remembers what time it was because he asked her! But he was no where to be seen when she turned round on noticing his odd attire.

An interesting story.

Ive never seen a chalk pit until this.

You did well to increase exposure here. The electricity tower and power lines could be removed if you wanted.

Ive done this in the mod, and cropped a little from the bottom. Removed a slight purple cast too.

A good story and an interesting location for shots.

The pits are in the far distance and still smallin the frame. Indeed the trees and buildings are more prominent. There is a lot of foreground too which dilutes the pits' presence in the frame.
You need to be closer. I don't know the location but as there is a housing estate close by there must be some way.

Having said that, as you've shot from a distance you do show how the pits tower over the houses which wouldn't be the case when shooting much closer in.
A subject worth exploring more and if youknow the area well I'm sure it won't take long to get 'the viewpoint' that really sets it off.
Maybe not in the evening though?

Thanks for your replies, I think I will return with my tripod in Spring and retake some shots.

There used to be a farm where the houses are now in the 50's, that man probably still thinks he's on his way to work at the pit.
