Yo-Ho-Ho......

By Brilane
Last week we went for a trip along the Llangollen Canal and over the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. Although the weather was fine the sky was overcast, and there was a chilly wind, but it was enjoyable and I can recommend the trip.
The crossing of the aqueduct is probably the only 'white knuckle' ride, in the world, that travels at only 4 mph, there is a tow path on one side of the aqueduct, but the other side has nothing, and looking over that side one is aware of a 125 feet drop to the valley floor below.
Vers. 1: Waiting to board the Heron class canal boat.
Vers 2&3: On the way.
Vers. 4: Approaching the aqueduct.
Vers.5. Entering the aqueduct.
Vers 6: A view of the valley floor.

The aqueduct was built by Thomas Telford and William Jessop and was opened in 1805. The aqueduct is a cast iron trough 11 ft wide and 5ft 3 inches deep, over 1000 yards long and supported at a height of 125 ft on 19 masonry arches. The mortar is a mix of water, lime and ox blood.

The aqueduct holds 1.5 million litres of water, and when maintenance is required they simply pull the plug, and the water drains away, in 2 hours, onto the valley floor below.

In June2009 the aqueduct was awarded the status of a World Heritage site, thus putting it on a par with the Great Barrier Reef, the Taj Mahal and the Statue of Liberty
.Regards
Brian.

A fine set Brian, viewing these was like reliving the trip I made on it back in the spring of 2010! It was definitely a white knuckle ride when I was on there too with my mates Gwyn "Sparky" Hughes and Chris "Panda" Moss steering the boat! lol This canal was very scenic and the trip was most enjoyable inspite of the two afforementioned clowns steering!
