You just keep me hangin on...

By NDODS
Keeping with the theme of Dungeness, here is a little background. The name Dungeness derives from Old Norse nes: "headland", with the first part probably connected with the nearby Denge Marsh. Popular etymology ascribes a French origin to the toponym, giving an interpretation as "dangerous nose".

This image shows on of the few partially standing signal posts which are scattered along the shingle beach. The posts were used as part of the once very active Military Ranges which connected to the nearby Hythe and Lydd Ranges. I remember with great fondness when I was a young and very inexperienced soldier when we would spend a day at the said ranges, then head off to Shornecliffe Barracks which was located in Sandgate further down the coast for a well earned pot of gruel kindly provided by the Aldershot Cement Company (ACC).

Thank you for all your wonderful comments and messages following yesterdays upload, a few words of wisdom were passed on as to how to improve the fore mentioned image, after taking into consideration what had been said I uploaded a variant shortly afterwards. "A man who makes no mistakes knows nothing?"

I hope that you all have a great day ahead, unfortunately or fortunately Kizmet never made the vets yesterday, as there was an emergency operation to be carried out. So we have to pop down today.

Regards as always Nathan

Love your comment from yesterday - I must know loads! This is a great image - the difference between the sky & shore is great. If I lived there bet I could good pictures too - or maybe not! Have a good day, Nathan.Grin

I can identify the spot precisely! Though ramshackle, the building does have a military look (of another era); thanks for explaining the barbed wire on concrete posts which I hadn't figured out before.
The threatening sky might be a metaphorical reminder that there is a nuclear power station not half a mile further on.......
Excellent work, Nathan.

Excellent composition, I know this well but I've never got a decent shot of it, it's very cluttered as a subject. Using portrait balances the clutter with the clean simple lines of the board walk and the cable. Clever.

Despite most of us liking yesterday's moody image you made a lovely modification.
Today's image with interesting narrative works well with that lead in path and portrait format.

Rather wonderful, and very odd - so that I reckon the very slight tilt to the horizon is deliberate, and intended to unsettle. Rest assured, it does!

Deserves to do well!

A splendid lead in to this shot Nathan, against the shingle back ground, like that heavy brooding sky also, I wondered about mono? did you consider it! I know the colour and light on the shingle lifts it a bit, it has a good atmosphere, like it, regards Leon.GrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrin

Well captured Nathan. I have no memories of Dungerness in weather other than this, although I am sure the sun must shine there sometimes.
