"You take the first dog watch"

Taken at Hatton Locks, the dog was keeping a lookout on progress through the locks. According to Wikipedia, a dog watch, in marine or naval terminology, is a watch, a period of work duty, between 16:00 and 20:00 (4 pm and 8 pm). The first dog watch is from 16:00 to 18:00; the second is from 18:00 to 20:00.
