Your starter for ten

So how many people identified the poem that Janet was reading, just from the thumbnail?

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat that doesn't go, and doesn't suit me,
And I shall spend my pension
on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals,
and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I am tired,
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells,
And run my stick along the public railings,
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick the flowers in other people's gardens,
And learn to spit.
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat,
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go,
Or only bread and pickle for a week,
And hoard pens and pencils and beer mats
and things in boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry,
And pay our rent and not swear in the street,
And set a good example for the children.
We will have friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practise a little now?
So people who know me
are not too shocked and surprised,
When suddenly I am old
and start to wear purple!

(Jenny Joseph)

This was also read recently at the funeral of a dear friend. It suited her.
Thanks for looking,
Moira

Great poem and pictures Moira. V2 my favourite but sadly, she had removed the hat. (The red one) Smile

Always liked that poem, the first half anyway.
Very aptly chosen portraits, I especially like V1.

Good morning folks. The poem is something of an anthem for women of my generation.

That's some hat! More like an awning really!
Oh dear, I've started wearing exaggerated cheque shirts and inappropriate shoes so perhaps my poor old body is ageing too.
As long as "your" generation has such wonderfully young minds though us lot here are going to continue to be blessed with seeing such lovely photographs, thanks for sharing Mrs W.

One of the downsides of being the father of the groom at a wedding is that you don't get the chance to take many pictures. And it saddens me that i can't find and post a shot of Mrs Dudler wearing purple (well - mauve) for our son's wedding last year. I have pictures, but the only Silly Sunday aspect of posting them would be the suggestion that I have a death wish. Mrs D is not a willing model for my camera, and believes that I am unable to take a good picture of her. This is close to a self-fulfilling prophecy...

And she'll love this set!

Thanks for the UA, Ollie, and thanks everyone.
I should add a bit more about Janet. Great-grandmother, retired medical practice manager, environmental volunteer, she's a strong woman. The poem suited her.
