It is an extremely well executed image. I can see exactly what you were trying, but I am split between realism in natural history and an attempt to produce a very different picture.

I think, on reflection, that I like it quite a lot. Just wonder if the background tones and contrast could be manipulated a little to enhance separation?

I bet that was difficult to do Dave & you have done well here.
I do prefer the slightly muted colours of V3 but to me the branch looks a little 'dropped in' against the bg.When you are masking off use a slightly harder brush & magnify the image right up in P/shop,that way you can clearly see where spillage has occured or where you need to blend the subject a little more onto the layers,you don't need to use 100% on your brush opacity either,just enough to fade it gradually away.
