Stavanger, the fourth largest city in Norway, is located in the county of Rogaland - right at the beginning of the most spectacular part of the coast, with the Lysefjord as a most impressive example of the Norwegian coastal attractions. One of the most famous locations in the Lysefjord is the so-called Preikestolen, which is a very high rectangular rock with a spectacular view of the fjord.
The city has a historic centre, but also contains a lot of concrete buildings, which have ruthlessly been combined with the old - except in the heart of the shopping centre, and in so-called Old Stavanger, where a few streets with characteristic white wooden houses have been carefully preserved.
The city has Norway's oldest cathedral, the Stavanger Domkirke, which is situated right in the city centre. And Stavanger has several beautiful lakes.
The centre of the attention, though, is usually the harbour, and especially the guest harbour. Here the most spectacular yachts and cruise ships moor. And here tourists find the smaller vessels which are used for short day cruises to the Lysefjord and outlying islands. It is also the part of town with the busiest nightlife.
Stavanger is served by an airport, which is located 14 km from the city centre, in the municipality of Sola. And numerous ferries sail to Stavanger - among them the DFDS Seaways ferry from Newcastle.
