Adventurer and acclaimed professional photographer, Scotsman Wilf James has lived and worked in France for nearly 10 years, dividing his time between Paris and the beautiful seaside village of Peyriac-de-Mer.
Situated in the Languedoc Roussillon area of the South of France in the magnificently rugged region of Les Corbires, this area of over 3,000 sq. km, with the Pyrnes Mountains and frontier with Spain to the south and the Mediterranean Sea to the east, is wild yet hospitable.
Here, in this beautiful part of France where the sun shines more than 300 days a year, you are engulfed by a rich history. One after the other, over the centuries, many cultures and civilisations have left their mark: Arabs, Greeks, Romans, Visigoths and Carthaginians have put their stamp on the magnificent Corbires region. But the Mediterranean heritage is also a natural one, nature having been fashioned and changed by human labour; by peasants, fishermen, and wine growers.
Despite a troubled past marked by incessant invasions from time immemorial, this region has never forsaken its tradition of hospitality. Sometime between the second and third week of September the grape harvest Les Vendanges begins. This is a time of hard work combined with a great deal of conviviality and celebration; a time that is the culmination of the yearly cycle of tending the vines - for when the grapes are ready, they must be picked and transported quickly to the winery to be made into wine.
This area is also famous for hosting the largest gathering of photographers and photojournalists in the world. This event, which takes place in Perpignan at the beginning of September, lasts for two weeks. This is also when Wilf James Photo Adventure Workshops take place.
