Seem to have had a busy weekend, photography wise at least.
Rounded off today, with a trip into town to watch the Annual Duck Race. Basically what happens is a load of plastic ducks, with numbers on the bottom, are thrown into the Swale at Green Bridge, and the first one to the finish line, mid-way between the falls and Mercury Bridge wins. The Ducks are sold to the public, for charity, so the owners of the 1st three ducks home, and the last win a prize.
The event is run by Richmond Duck Club, which formed around 1900 as a social club for working men and to enable an annual outing to be taken, usually to the seaside in a time when the idea of planned recreation was in its infancy. The story goes that the origins of the name ‘Duck Club’ may be attributed to the fact that during the annual excursion which was undertaken by open-top charabanc, each time the vehicle approached a low hanging branch or bridge everyone would need to ‘duck’. Since those early days the Duck Club has maintained its social side, even retaining the annual excursion but has also evolved into a charitable organisation favouring children. To this end, funds are raised and events organised to benefit individuals and groups of children in the town.
The Duck Club members are a mixed group of mainly tradespeople as has been the case since the club was formed, they continue to meet at the Black Lion Hotel at 7.30pm on the first Friday of every month.
So todays image is of one of the Duck Wranglers, taking a short cut over the falls, some of their colleagues decided it was better to get out and carry their kayaks around the falls.
I only wish i'd had a better angle on this.
