Project 365 - 313
9 Nov 2014 5:04PM Views : 558 Unique : 410A Town Remembers.
Went into Richmond this morning, as we always do on this day, to the service in the Friary Gardens.
Theres always a good turn out, this year seemed to be bigger than ever. Not really surprised to be honest as the town has some very strong military ties, with Catterick just down the road, although Richmond was once home to the Green Howards, and still home to their regimental museum.
It occurs to me however, despite the good turn out, the regular older faces are disappearing, to be replaced by the younger ones, i suppose it's just time catching up with them.
Today i think about the family members, who have served, i suppose we've been lucky, only one has fallen in battle. Gunner William James Hardy, died at the 1st Battle of El Alamein on the 21st July 1942.
My Grandfather too, fought but in Burma with the 14th Army, but returned safely, then my father after him fought in Aden in the 60's, then my Uncle who served with the Royal Navy in the Falklands. It doesn't seem five minutes since i was a boy of 7 watching in awe as the huge fleet returned to port.
Also my thoughts turn towards the community i live in, Catterick, where in recent years many have left never to return, those who won't grow old but gave their lives to protect our freedom.
May They Rest in Peace.
But equally we must not forget those who have returned, all of them changed by their experiences, either mentally or physically, all have given so much, a debt i feel that cannot be repaid.
This little scene grabbed my attention today, it has a story to tell, but i think i'll leave it for you to ponder on.
