The Road To Mandalay

By WhiteRose1
On the road to Mandalay,
Where the flyin'-fishes play,
An' the dawn comes up like thunder outer China 'crost the Bay!
............. Rudyard Kipling

Well... this is on the way to Mandalay but the term 'road' should be used loosely. Kipling should have stuck to making cakes.

The 2-bullock powered carts are actually taxis and used by locals as well as the tourists.

Your response to my last was unexpected and amazing, my thanks to all concerned.

Couldn't decide between the two versions so you get them both Grin

Dave

These are two most excellent photos Dave ! You have captured the essence of travelling on that 'road ' so well- the dust, the dog, the people walking. One could nearly smell the atmosphere here Smile

These shots give an idea about the roads (!) carts, cars, people, stay dogs and the traffic in Burma, Dave. Both are well managed wonderful compositions, the light in V1 is greater, but I like both.

Both the versions are very good. In version 2 the front bullock cart is more distinguished and clear but missing the the second one here.
I would have added the 2nd bullock cart by digitally manuplating in the ver2. Deep

Two superb images Dave, congrats on your last upload! V1 for me, great composition, I love the receding detail as you go into the image, caused by the dust, expertly done!
16 Dec 2012 7:14AM
Both great travel shots. I personally prefer the first due to the two carts. I really like the composition where the lead cart is clean ad crisp and the second following in the dust. I notice a different lens, how are you getting on with it. Regards

V1 for me, by miles - for the balance with the second cart, half obscured by dust, and the relaxed angles of the driver's legs. I just love that single dangling foot. It conveys life in the slow lane.

I shall be thinking of suitably exotic recipes all day.

First-class photography and travelogue. V1 by miles for me, too. I can't think of a 'critique' comment; don't think one is necessary for those who have eyes to see.
My teacher at junior school, who may possibly have served in Burma, often criticised Kipling's geography because Mandalay is too far from the sea for flying fish to reach Smile
If Moira had not already used her U.A. you would have had two woolybill distinctions now.

A wonderfully observed, composed, and processed image of the rural scene Dave. The dust generated by the carts provides a somewhat romanticised image of this what appears on the outside to be an idyllic life.

This shows very quick eye and hands to frame up and shoot moving targets so well. There's lots to like here; both the character of the scene and the 'racing' feel to it. I think having the first cart close to the edge of frame it's heading towards creates excitement and tension. Your eye is not led out of the frame but rather to the seecond cart. The second cart works so well at leading the eye due the linear compression of your long lens making the cart sit higher up the frame. The scene isn't flattened by the compression effect as sometimes happens because depth is created by the receeding symmetry of the carts which is further echoed in the truck at the very back. As others have said the second cart creates balance too. This is an extremely accomplished piece of travel/'street' photography and I love it! Grin

Version 1 is my favourite of two superb photographs!
Excellent use of f4 dof - spot on focus on the leading cart, sorry, taxi.
