Hello, Alan - and welcome both to Ephotozine and to the Critique Gallery.

This is the part of the site where you won't be able to get awards or votes, but where you will get some focussed feedback: if you don't want that, make sure you don't have a tick in the 'Critique' box on the upload screen. If you do want constructive comments and options, the more yo ucan tell us about what you wanted to achieve the better. Did the picture end up the way that you wanted? particularly, we need the EXIF data, so using 'save for web' isn't a good idea, as it usually strips the data out of the image file, as does uploading from a mobile device or another website.

Working with what I can see, this is a little dark, and I really wish the tip of the flower (I reckon it's a lupin) was in frame. I'd also crop out the bright flower i nthe top left corner of the shot.

Let us know whether you want critique - and, whatever you decide, enjoy looking round hte site, and exploring al lthe many styles of photogrpahey here!

It's no a bad effort at all. The plant is sharp and well shown. The problem is the out of focus white bloom behind which pulls the eye from the main cluster. Try and look at the background if you have time, before pressing the button and see if you can compose a little differently

Always try and scan the edges of a frame and keep any strong highlights from the edge.

"Thanks for the comments" is not a satisfactory reply to John's questions.

This leaves me and others in a quandary (a state of perplexity or uncertainty over what to do) as to whether to give critique or not.

Pamela.

PS: I see that you have uploaded another picture to the Critique Gallery, Alan, and so I assume that is your intention.

Welcome from me too.

It does help us t help you if you stat what you wanted to achieve and why you think you have or haven't achieved that.

From what I see, the flower is not sharp. Quite likely a focus error, though without the exif data I can't rule out camera shake which is likely with close ups in less than bright conditions if hand holding the camera. Use a smaller aperture, focus carefullt and supposrt the camera well, ideally on a tripod.

Leave a little breathing space top and bottom of the bloom or crop in closer. Having it just touch the edges isn't as visually pleasing. It works with some subjrcts, less so here.

Always look out for distractions at the edges and in the background and adjust your shootingposition or place something behind the flower such as a cloth or pire of card so the attention is all on the subject.
