Exchange Quarter

By ade_mcfade
Never been a fan of this new fad for calling areas of cities "quarters".

It's a bit like calling a photo shoot a "workshop", just a little pretentious. Workshops are where you weld things together or chop up wood and come out with a chair, and quarters are a 25% of a whole thing.

The exchange quarter is nowhere near 1/4 of Leeds, and neither is the Victoria Quarter and nor is the Northern Quarter of Manchester 25% of that city centre..

Anyway, this is the Corn Exchange area where a good few years ago, the Town House, Fudge and Pitcher and Piano used to be the hub of Leeds' night life, you'd walk on a beach of broken glass from one bar to another, pushing through a blend of rugby types and chavs to get your next over priced drink in a bar with little personality.

I'm sure Dan Pearson has a few stories from down here anyway Smile

Leeds has moved on now, this area is now a lot quieter and a nicer place to go - and as you can see pretty quiet at 5:45 on a tuesday evening in October.

This is 3 shots over 6 stops, blended in photomatix and straightened up a little in Photoshop.

Good shot Ade, love the straight buildings. The streaky cloud almost looks like smoke from the chimney, except it isn't and its off to one side - youknowwhatImean Smile

If it were me, and bearing in mind I know nothing about landscapes or cityscapes, I would have cropped the part of building on the left hand side. I keep finding it draws my eye away from the subject.

Otherwise I like it, and I also like the not 100% correction of the lens distortion.

Indeed .. Chris who owns Town House used to have the Harry Ford clothing stores in the Corn Ex and VIctoria Qtr ... before selling up, taking a second mortgage and doing a refurb to create the town house. Which at the time cost well in excess of 1 million. Despite Leslie Ash and Chapmans private members bar, teatro, the Townhouse came to be Leeds' must be seen place.

Cafe Rouge used to do a fab belgian fish stew too though I used to spend more of my time in the nearby Pizza Express. The town house did have a 3rd floor restaurant for a while before it was converted to more bar space but it was the doyen of Leeds bars with 25-30K possible in takings on a friday and saturday night respectively.

Once again another area always popular with the local red light workers ... not that I would know anything about that of course ..... but I expect they still roam the streets in droves.

Incidentally the corn ex used to have one of the best bonsai stands in the country in there but Im told the old guy has retired now and his grandson no longer continues the business .....

There go the ramblings of a mad man on belgian ale .... Wink

Thought you'd have been there at some point Dan Smile

More of a North Bar fan myself, a little classier, better beer, you can talk to the person next to you and you're never quite sure what the soundtrack to the night will be... .it was 30's black blues one night, that was a laugh!

I see what you mean Cheryl, you do get dragged down there a little - the reason for the inclusion is to give some space around the building really. If you crop off much more of the left, it starts looking like it's crammed in a little.
