London Icons

Had a nice stroll around the abandoned bliss that is the City of London on a Sunday, amazing how somewhere can be so dead compared to a working day.

The aim was to get shots of the gherkin really, taken from different view points to the norm if possible. Here's one I've certainly not seen before. The nat West tower being the main event, with the Gherkin providing a frame for it.

Mono was the way to go with such a graphic shot I think.

A very good angle you chose for this shot and a grand conversion. Works really well.

An effective shot Ade, I like the dark mono conversion it ads to the imposing nature of the buildings. The faceted reflection is also a very good touch.

I have not been into the city on a Sunday for a long time and then I only did it once as everything was shut. It does have that sort of almost eerie post apocalyptic day of the triffids feel.

Love the striking verticals of the NatWest and how they contrast with the broken lines of the Gherkin. The broken reflections are a nice foil too.

Good piece of work Ade.

Chers folks

I kept those old bits in to create some interesting reflections Smile

Also, it's 3 ages of the city too - the old, the 80's (nat west) and the current)

one of me faves of 2008 so far

Another fine shot Ade, this time another city lol.... I like the curve of the Gherkin how it complements the other angles.
Get on to Ikea you could make a bomb out of this one Smile

Very nice Ade, I was there myself on Saturday, getting pictures of the Gherkin and various others. I agree the angle is very strong and it works great in mono.

Have to agree with all of the above, very stricking Ade, really like the fragmented reflections in the Geherkins windows.

Nice one Pete - I knew this was quite a special shot when processing it, pretty underwhelmed by the response from the masses - EC's make up for that kinda thing

Congrats on making double figuresSmile
A classy shot. Architecture tends to underwhelm, even when it's as good as this. Like the strong linear composition and contrasty presentation as it suits the subject so well..

Funny old world........some shots on here get double the votes of this image (or more) yet there's no comparison. This is quality.

What a quality shot. Lovely to see the gherkin used in this way; the broken reflections in combination with the diagonals of light on its glass work brilliantly as a contrast to the verticals and horizontals in the rest of the image.

A striking shot Ade, and very well suited to the BW treatment. I'm almost tempted to get off my arse and go and try something similar in down-town Birmingham.

Congrats Ade. This is the first time I have seen it and it really does deserve such an award.I t is extremely strong graphically and I can just imagine you pushing the self same sliders which you have advised me to do in the past. The composition is something else. Tremendous.
I have just noticed it also got Editors choice. Congrats again.

Nice photo, looks very good in B&W. Shame about the crane in the background (assuming thats what it is). It seems to be almost impossible to get photos of the London skyline these days without one - or usually more - giant cranes intruding into the composition.
Well done Ade for the POTW

Can`t understand the stats on this one Ade?
500 plus views = 3 awards to 87 votes---something not quite right there!
Very well done,a great series.I think you,ve got the very best out of what was once a architects vision---a greater compliment couldn`t be made.

of course I agree Kim - but funnily ehough, till Pet gate it an EC, it hadn'#t even reached 30 votes.

It's just not a popular subject really - buildings and stuff.

Cheers everyone, awaiting the canvas's arrival with glee Smile
